Diamonds in the Library

When I worked for a management consulting firm, I frequently called upon Margaret Hickey, the head librarian of the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Margaret was underpaid, overworked, and underappreciated, but not by me! She knew about every book on small business. She catalogued each item, knew every article, and remembered most of the authors. She knew about the think tank, university, and government-based publications, as well as special reports.

One day I asked her if she kept track of the requested topics by the library patrons. She showed me a list of fifteen topics that represented several years and hundreds of inquiries for information, as well as another list of requests she had not been able to fulfill. A municipal librarian had similar lists. Then it struck me—librarians know what isn’t being covered in books, which gave me an innovative advantage. Librarians! What a concept.

Likewise, an information specialist, web guru, software guru, or grammarian, might dwell right on your floor. These people represent your acres of diamonds, knowledge resources you can talk to by walking down the hall. Instead of endless rounds of online searches or e-mail and phone tag, you could have a coworker two doors down who can lead you to resources, new ideas, and even breakthroughs.
